Useful information

Dominican Republic is located in the heart of the Greater Antilles, it is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the south and the Mona Channel to the east, which separates it from Puerto Rico.

The country is located on the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti. The Dominican Republic has four mountain ranges, with peaks of more than 3,000 meters above sea level, giving it a great variability of climate, temperature and biotopes. Its economic and administrative capital, Santo Domingo, is located in the south of the island. It is the largest city in the Antilles.

The bay of Samana, one of the most remarkable places in the Caribbean for humpback whale watching, is located in the north-east of the country, a three-hour drive from Santo Domingo. The Banco de la Plata is the first marine protected area of the North Atlantic region and now is a part of a large marine mammals sanctuary, which is also included the Banco del Pañuelo, the Banco de la Navidad, part of the Samaná bay and the intermediate waters in the banks.
